HONK! Festival ’09 and being a marching/street band as told by the Springville All Star Marching Band.
As a band that has been afforded the amazing opportunity to perform and take in everything that HONK! Festival had to offer, we could give advice but we are still a relatively young band. Instead, we thought that we would just say a few things about how we did leading up to HONK! Festival and what we hope to keep on doing now that HONK! 09 has come and gone.
We started out as a very small group and our numbers grew as we got more people interested in what we set out to do: make music and have a good time. What seemed to work for us is getting uniforms first and then getting people with instruments that they will fit. If that doesn’t work then we would hack them to pieces, sew them back together, and make it work. Also, when we play, we have a great time.
It’s not just about us getting to have all the fun either. Anyone we can reach with the music we play will, we hope, be changed in some way. Inspiring people to dance like all get out at one of our shows, getting people’s feet tapping, coercing a few smiles or even getting people to join up. All this to say: everyone can HONK! It doesn’t take any one kind of person or group to get a street/marching band going. By getting to go to and play at HONK! Festival we witnessed this firsthand, and to us, that’s so incredible.
