Honk!Fest West live report

April 10th, 2010 § 2

(Fremont, WA) Honk! Fest West 2010 started out in fine form Friday night on the streets and parking lots of Fremont, WA., aka the Center of the Universe. For close to four hours, bands from as far away as Providence, RI, Brooklyn, NY, Austin, TX, Santa Rosa & Palo Alto, CA, and Vancouver, BC all played for a crowd of over 1000 in four separate, but fairly close together, locations. By the end of the evening, members of various bands could be seen joining in with the Carnival Band of Vancouver in what promised to be the first of many moments of band cross-pollination. Photos and a short video follow below…

HD Issue #1

HD Issue #1 - click to go to Download page

Friends of Music and Political Change,

After much sweat and battling with one of our computers, the premiere issue of Harmonic Dissidents is out!  Some of us from the Honk!Fest street band community have pooled our efforts to produce this interactive magazine and website. We hope you can use it to promote music as a force for positive political change. Harmonic Dissidents #1 contains:

  • Inside looks at Obama’s plan to stimulate community music,

  • Ready-to-play arrangements of some good tunes,

  • Reports from bands with great ideas on performance opportunities,

  • Perspectives on community music making,

  • A profile of community music advocate Charlie Keil, and

  • Plans for Honk!Fest 4 in Somerville, MA, Oct 9-11.

You can download the whole magazine in a variety of formats here.  You can also read individual articles here on the website and submit comments regarding each article if you so wish.  Links are to the right in the navigation column.

Of course you will find more links there to other stories and websites but you will also find a link or two to our wiki.

You can contribute comments at the end of each article.  In our Forums you can join in our growing online community.  Feel free to propose new subjects pertinent to promoting street music and a more open society there.  As we continue to evolve our archives will too and more information about street bands will be found there.

We hope you will be an active participant in this project. Share your thoughts, report on your band, or contribute an article, arrangement, video or graphic. Spread the word at Honk!Fest and here on Harmonic Dissidents.

many thanks, Bill Clifford

Kicking Into Gear

August 24th, 2009 § 0

Harmonic Dissidents will, we hope, advance the activist elements of Honk bands. The idea of launching this e-zine has been kicking around for more than a year, but we needed a kick in the pants to get it going. We actually got two.

Carnies at Spot's HFW1

Carnival Band playing at Mr. Spot's Chai House, Honk!Fest West 2009

The first was the brouhaha in Seattle over associating strippers with the Honk Fest name in a Seattle fund-raiser in February 2009 called “Tits and Brass.” The ensuing arguments about subsuming the progressive politics of the Honk movement to the neo-burlesque aesthetic were rancorous, hilarious, and multifaceted but did not resolve a single thing.  Fearing an uncontrolled slide into unbounded hedonism, some of us called for a workshop at Honk Fest West 2, April 2009 in Seattle, that would focus on politics.

That workshop refreshed our faith in Honking for peace, social justice, and empowered communities. The 30 participants—from California to British Columbia—were respectful, communicated skillfully and were enthusiastic about the role of street music in promoting political and social goals. We touched on the many things our bands do for our communities and our souls.  The other kick in the pants we got will be discussed in what will be our first print edition.

Yes, it is true!  Very shortly we will be releasing our very first print edition, full of interesting articles.  It will be available for free download as a pdf file on this site. Please bear with us as the finishing touches are made and keep an eye on HARMONIC DISSIDENTS.  Thanks!
